My Childhood Illness Came Back After 16 Years—and Almost Killed Me

I was 20 years old, studying abroad in Spain in the midst of my junior year of college, when I almost died. No one could figure out why I couldn’t breathe—I was on my own. I realized it was up to me to survive.

A couple of weeks earlier, my only feelings were excitement and joy that I was going on a 29-day trip to Spain. Then, on Christmas Day in Seville, I left my host family’s home to go for a 30-minute walk along a beautiful bike path. It wasn’t too hot, yet I felt winded and my face was on fire. By the time I got back to my host family’s house, I was completely out of breath and my heart was racing. After ascending the several flights of stairs to my room, I collapsed on the hardwood floor, grasping at my throat and chest in an attempt to remove what felt like a hand squeezing my airway shut. I couldn’t tell whether it was anxiety or something physically wrong that was robbing me of air. I didn’t even have enough air to call for help.

I started chanting a mantra as I pressed my cheek to the cold floor, hoping that a trace of oxygen would slip through the strawlike opening in my throat. I began repeating to myself, “You are strong and you are calm,” over and over again until I started to get more air into my lungs. Realizing that fear and helplessness were taking over, I used the mantra to establish control. I pledged that anxiety would not win this battle. I began taking small breaths: inhaling, 1 , 2; exhaling, 1, 2 (something I’ve learned from yoga). Here are the 11 tips for understanding and managing anxiety and panic disorder.

An hour later, I regained somewhat of a normal breathing rhythm, enough to call my translator and ask for help. After a steroid shot in the butt, an overdose from an inhaler, and a chest X-ray, all the doctor could tell me was, “Tienes bronquitis” (“You have bronchitis”). All I could think was that there’s no way bronchitis prompts that kind of reaction.

I wouldn’t learn until nearly three months later, back in the United States, that I had experienced a severe asthma attack. My mother remembered that I had it as an infant; a doctor confirmed that the asthma had returned. Here are the 7 symptoms of asthma every adult should know.

Looking back on that day, I have no idea how I was able to stay calm, but my reaction saved my life. Giving in to anxiety would have further tightened my airways; by integrating my yoga breathing exercises, I got through. I Quit Therapy and Finally Eased My Anxiety

My favorite day of the week used to be Tuesday. I would rush out of my office at 5 p.m., excited to tell my therapist everything that happened during the week since I last saw her. For an hour, I would unload my stress and anxiety—from work, family, friends, and potential love interests. My therapist, kind but blunt, wasn’t afraid to tell me I was being childish and made me face harsh realities when I romanticized a situation or person. I saw improvements in how I dealt with things; I was proof that therapy really works. Here are 9 more signs your therapist is helping you.

When I lost my job this past March, I turned to this advice for tips on how to handle being laid off. Of course, all I wanted to do was talk to my therapist about it, but I couldn’t afford to. I was nervous about the uncertainty of freelance life, anxious about covering my expenses, and embarrassed over losing a job. So to deal with all of these emotions, I got crafty and did three things that have made all the difference.

First, I started running, because I read how it’s one of the things that’s good for your mental health. To stay motivated, I treated the exercise like a work assignment; I gave myself a deadline each week to reach a certain distance and worked at it every day until I reached my goal. When I hit my benchmark for distance, I’d increase it the next week and start over again. This new routine doubled as a form of therapy. If a job meeting goes sour, I go for a run and feel better. The ex-boyfriend does something online that annoys me? I go for a run. Finances getting tight? A run helps the ease the panic. Learning to hit pause and walk—or run—for a bit is a truly healthy way to put things in perspective.

Second, I queued up more podcasts. I’ve found a podcast for every emotion I need to work through. When I’m feeling sad or lost, I find an advice-oriented podcast from someone who is going through similar troubles. When I’m dealing with professional difficulties, I listen to news and pop culture podcasts to distract—and sometimes inspire—me. Some of my favorites include “Pod Save America,” “Modern Love,” “Still Processing,” and “Dear Sugars.”

Third, the solitary nature of writing can leave me isolated, so I resolve to have at least one interaction with people every day. (It’s also key to maintaining your mental health, apparently.) I attend press events and take every meeting that comes my way. Even talking to the people who are making my iced chai at Starbucks makes my days feel less lonely. Do I miss my therapist? Absolutely. But will I go back to her someday? I’m not so sure anymore.
