12 Makeup Mistakes That Seriously Age Your Face

Choosing a dark lipstick

Lips lose their fullness over time, and dark colors make them look even smaller. Mauves and pinks, on the other hand, highlight lips and give the illusion of fullness. A swipe of lip gloss will plump them up even more. If you do decide to go for a darker shade, pick a sheer formula or a stain, which aren’t as flat as a heavier finish, or dab the color on with your finger. Pick a lip liner that matches the color of your lips, rather than your lipstick, to avoid an overly dark liner that will make your lips look pursed. Check out these makeup artists’ tricks to look younger.

How One Woman Lost 100 Pounds at 51—and Kept It Off

how-i-lost-100-lbs

The massive, wrinkled fat rolls pictured on the Facebook post repulsed me. I blinked hard before I noticed the middle-aged women who had flashed their abdomens for the camera were smiling. And then I saw it—the “fat happens” mantra beneath the photo. This is the exact age it becomes harder to lose weight.

My immediate thought was to delete the post. As I kept studying the picture, though, I decided I had to respond. I couldn’t post anything—not even an “LOL”—that might signal agreement with the sentiment, even though a dear friend had shared it. As a former chair-busting 40-something, I knew karma would punish me if I didn’t speak out.

“It doesn’t have to be that way,” I typed, noticing my left hand tremble just a bit as I pecked out the letters. Candidly, it was difficult to write even that. But those words had changed my life, prompting me to start a journey that led to losing 100 pounds. I hoped at least they’d give others pause.

After I lost the weight, I promised myself I’d never again support the belief that middle-aged women—and men—are destined to grow fat, lose muscle tone, and develop heart disease. I just couldn’t propagate that falsehood once I knew differently.

I was never a fat kid. I ate right, I was active, and I just had fun. But that all stopped after college as I walked the tightrope of my stressful career. Food was my escape. Sure, I tried to lose weight through the years. After dozens of half-hearted, failed efforts—name a diet and I tried it—I gave up. I told everyone I would always be fat. I couldn’t change.

I believed that until my husband and I, joined by two of our closest friends, took a cruise to the Caribbean to celebrate my 50th birthday. I was having incredible knee pain—that tends to happen when you weigh almost 250 pounds—and could hardly hobble around our cabin. Still I agreed to go on a shore excursion around one of the islands.

My knee threatened to give out several times as I slowly walked out of the cabin, around the stairways, and down the gangplank to the van. After hoisting myself into the van and taking a seat, I watched as a massively obese woman (even compared to me!), slowly climbed aboard. Everyone pretended not to notice the woman’s face, scrunched in pain, as she slowly shuffled to her seat.

“Ah, a glimpse into my future,” I jokingly whispered to my friend Sherry.

“No, it’s not,” my friend said in a dead-serious whisper. “It doesn’t have to be that way. You can diet. You can exercise. You can change.”

That simple statement triggered something in me. I started to think about my life and how I’d gone from semi-athletic kid to queen-size pantyhose wearer who could hardly walk a few hundred feet. And how my mom—who didn’t have the internet or DVD workout programs or any of the other more modern conveniences we have now—kept weight gain at bay.

Modern weight-loss systems weren’t working. Why not give the tried-and-true method a chance? Don’t miss the 50 things your doctor wishes you knew about losing weight.

These are the lessons I learned in my mission to lose 100 pounds:

  • You can’t buy weight loss. Yes, there are plenty of high-priced diets and workouts available. Unless you are committed to losing weight, though, no pricey systems will do a shred of good.
  • Calories count. Count them. When I began my serious weight-loss journey, I used (and still use) the free tracking system SparkPeople. Yes, it takes time to track food, but the accountability you gain is well worth the time and money.
  • Think ahead. If I knew I was going to dine out, which I rarely did, I would pre-plan my meal. Then I could put the calories into my tracker ahead of time. Pre-planning let me know exactly how much I could eat the rest of the day so as not to exceed my calorie limit.
  • Network. SparkPeople has a recipe database and forums where members share ideas. I credit those forums with introducing me to healthier versions of recipes I enjoyed (chicken fingers, tuna casserole). The quality of your food calories count, and this program helped me eat healthy, appealing foods. Another bonus: The other members gave me words of encouragement when I didn’t lose weight or, sadly, gained weight. Their words meant a lot, because they understood.
  • Set aside time to exercise. You don’t need to join a gym or buy expensive equipment. You do need to set aside the time to move and commit to moving during that time. Yes, you’re busy. We all are. But how much is your health worth? I started moving by thinking about what I liked to do as a kid—swimming. So I joined a community gym and began swimming. I branched out to other exercises from there. One of my favorites is “walking workouts” by fitness guru Leslie Sansone. There are plenty of other at-home exercises that work well too.
  • Choose to move. Remember: All movement counts toward fitness and weight loss, even housework and laundry. Set a timer to remind yourself to move at least once an hour—no, you won’t remember. A timer can help build the habit.

Now that you’ve heard about Nancy’s journey, it’s time to start your own. Make changes to  your lifestyle with these 50 ways to lose weight without a lick of exercise.

What Your Doctor’s Really Thinking (But Won’t Say to Your Face)

Put away your phone!

Close-up hand of asian woman using smart phone

“I hate when patients text during a visit. It tells me that they do not value my time. I feel disrespected. I have left patients talking on their phone in the examining room and moved on to see another patient.” —David Broyles, DO, a doctor of family medicine who practices in the Philadelphia suburbs. These are 11 other annoying habits patients have, according to doctors.

How to Get Rid of Blackheads: 13 Proven Tricks

Know the enemy

Pimple blackheads on the face of an Asian teenager

The first step in fixing the problem is understanding exactly what it is. Blackheads are actually a type of acne that form when a pore is clogged with oil or dead skin cells. “Most people don’t know that it turns black because the content of the congested pore gets exposed to oxygen (oxidizes) and darken,” explains Biba de Sousa, an esthetician in Beverly Hills. Here’s how to tell fact from fiction when it comes to large pores.

The Toxic Chemical Lurking in Your Favorite Lipstick

The government and consumer watchdog groups are taking beauty companies to task for some of their toxic ingredients—and it’s about time. For now, though, it’s still important you use caution. Why? There may be lead in your lipstick.

The Food and Drug Administration and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics began researching lead in lipstick around 2007: They found that 61 percent of 33 popular lipstick brands tested positive for lead. An expanded 2010 study by the FDA found lead in over 400 different lipsticks. Researchers at the University of California discovered that lead isn’t the only thing to be wary of: They found toxic metals like chromium, aluminum, and manganese can also turn up in beauty products. (Find out the 31 secrets the beauty industry doesn’t want you to know.)

Flat lay fashion with lipsticks, Essential beauty item

“Lead contamination in lipstick is a documented problem that can adversely impact the health of women and kids that dip into their mother’s makeup bag,” says Janet Nudelman, director of Program and Policy at the Breast Cancer Prevention Partners, as well as director of BCPP’s Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. “Men are also at risk of exposure from lead acetate in men’s hair dye, like Grecian Formula, and other sources.”

Lead poses health risks to men and women of all ages, but children should be extra cautious of products containing lead. “The main problem with lead is that it’s neurotoxin in that is has an effect on the brain,” explains Nneka Leiba, director of Healthy Living Science at EWG. “So it’s especially harmful to younger children because the brain isn’t fully developed.”

Experts agree that there is “no safe” level of lead: Low amounts can cause weakness, increases in blood pressure, and anemia; higher exposure can severely damage the brain, kidneys, and other organs—and it can be life-threatening.

You can stay safe by shopping smartly: “Consumers should avoid lipsticks that they know have tested high in lead contamination,” says Nudelman. “They should contact their favorite brands and ask them if they have a policy in place to test their raw materials for lead contamination.” Here are 12 more toxic ingredients found in your beauty products.

“You have to do your research,” adds Leiba.

You can learn more about the FDA’s take on this problem here.

Wondering what other beauty products might be harmful? Here are the signs your skin products are secretly damaging your face.

9 Reasons Glycolic Acid Is the Miracle Your Skin Has Been Waiting For

Glycolic-AcidWhat is glycolic acid?

“Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid derived from sugar cane,” notes Dhaval G. Bhanusali, MD, board-certified dermatologist. What separates it from the likes of lactic and salicylic acids is its small molecular size that allows it to penetrate deeper into the skin to target your complexion concerns—whether it’s congested pores, blemishes, fine lines, uneven tone, or rough texture—and deliver more noticeable results. These are the sneaky reasons you might be breaking out.

Glycolic acid makes skin glow

A variety of factors, such as aging and dryness, can slow down skin’s natural shedding process leading to a dull, lackluster complexion. Glycolic acid-based exfoliants slough off dead skin cells, but not in the way you might expect. Unlike harsh scrubs, they work by gently dissolving the “glue” that makes old skin cells stick to the epidermis, revealing radiant, glowing skin. Reap the rewards of everyday exfoliation with a gentle cleanser, such as Glytone Mild Gel Cleanser or BeautyRx Balancing Glycolic Cleanser. Try these tricks for that natural glow.

Glycolic acid refines pores

Glycolic acid helps to unclog, refine, and diminish the appearance of enlarged pores by dissolving makeup, dirt, oil, and excess sebum. “After nightly cleansing, saturate a cotton pad with Mario Badescu Glycolic Acid Toner or SkinMedica Rejuvenative Toner. Get your fix on the go with a pre-soaked pad. “Peter Thomas Roth Max Complexion Correction Pads has both glycolic and salicylic acids,” says board-certified dermatologist Debra Jaliman, MD. “Bliss That’s Incredi-‘Peel’! Glycolic Resurfacing Pads are individually wrapped, so they’re easy to throw in your gym bag for after a workout.” And be sure to avoid these bad habits that can clog pores.

Glycolic acid fades discoloration

Dreaming of a more even-looking complexion? “Since glycolic acid sloughs off the top layer of the skin, it can help fade and even pigmentation, brown spots, and melasma,” explains Dr. Jaliman. Slather on a serum, like Drunk Elephant T.L.C. Framboos Glycolic Night Serum, which contains a cocktail of AHAs (glycolic, lactic, tartaric, citric, and salicylic), or Naturopathica AHA Refining Night Serum, and let it work its magic overnight.

Glycolic acid improves texture

Say goodbye to roughness. Glycolic acid is a skin-smoothing miracle worker. This chemical exfoliant revs up cellular turnover to resurface and retexturize skin, leaving it noticeably softer and smoother. You already know the perks of regular exfoliation, but what about the pitfalls? Don’t miss the exfoliating mistakes that could do serious damage to your skin.

Glycolic acid treats acne

Glycolic acid is one of the ingredients should be part of your zit-zapping arsenal. Not only does it penetrate deep into the skin to address cystic and regular breakouts, but it helps increase cell turnover, accelerates healing, and fades acne scars. For all-over blemish control try SkinCeuticals Blemish and Age Defense. To eliminate monster bumps, Dr. Jaliman suggests reaching for Murad Acne Control Spot Treatment. A wash like Glytone Exfoliating Body Wash or Donell AHA 20 Body Tingle can help eradicate body breakouts.

Glycolic acid combats the signs of aging

Want to turn back the clock on your complexion? There’s a reason glycolic acid is used in chemical peels and so many anti-aging topicals. Most notably, it stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, the keys to firm, youthful skin. Dr. Bhanusali suggests using in an at-home glycolic acid peel, like Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Medi–Spa Peel, to improve tone, renew skin, and fight fine lines on a weekly basis. Keep in mind that these retinol-like results come with similar side effects, including increased photosensitivity, so it’s imperative to wear sunscreen every day.

Glycolic acid helps keratosis pilaris

“It’s also excellent for keratosis pilaris, often referred to as chicken skin, those pesky, itchy bumps found on the backs of arms,” says Dr. Jaliman. Instead of using an abrasive scrub, try applying a glycolic acid lotion, such as Alpha Skincare Revitalizing Body Lotion or Neostrata High Potency Cream, before bedtime. This will help unclog pores and dissolve dry skin sans irritation. Read up on eight foolproof ways to finally get rid of chicken skin.

Glycolic acid prevents ingrown hairs

Ingrown hairs—those unsightly red bumps that pop up in the armpit area and bikini zone—occur when a strand curls back down into the skin instead of growing out. While it is possible to tackle ingrown hairs at home, poking and prodding with a tweezer is not a solution. The best way to banish bumps is to prevent them in the first place. And for that, glycolic acid is a total game-changer, exfoliating away dead skin cells and thwart the formation of future ingrowns. Completely Bare Bikini Bump Blaster Pads and Bliss Ingrown Eliminating Pads are also infused with witch hazel to soothe redness and inflammation.

Glycolic acid can be used by everyone

One of the best things about glycolic acid—other than its myriad benefits—is that everyone can use it, regardless of age, skin type (even sensitive complexions), and tone. Plus, it’s safe to use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

14 Little Ways to Instantly Turn a Bad Mood Around

Fake yourself out

Literally turn that frown upside down: The act of smiling, even if you’re totally faking, can make you feel happier, psychologist Edward J. Cumella, PhD, told Reader’s Digest. Same goes for laughing, so watch a quick video of your favorite comedian or TV show, or the recorded antics of your pet or toddler. Or try these funny product reviews. They are guaranteed to make you laugh so hard you cry, chasing away your moody blues.

Try color therapy

Wearing red can help you feel more confident, which might help you stare down that bad mood and send it packing. And even if Kermit says it’s not easy being green, color psychologists tell us that wearing—or even just seeing!—a nice fresh green can evoke happiness. Need to feel more relaxed? Then try a blue hue.

Tune in to a tune

Music is a known mood-booster, so pop on an upbeat playlist of your favorites and cheer up quickly. Research has found that listening to music can reduce the pain and anxiety of surgery, so it should work when you just need a perk-up! It has a cumulative effect, too. If you want a longer-lasting mood boost, prescribe yourself at least one happy song a day.

Give yourself a mini-massage

A full-body massage from a professional therapist is ideal for stress relief. But when you need a quick fix, try this handy trick. Press your thumb into the outside corner of the palm of your opposite hand. Slowly massage, using a circular motion. Then move your thumb inward and repeat your circles. Continue inching inward until you reach the center of your palm.

Hug it out

Hugging one of your favorite people or animals can instantly lift your mood with a surge of “happy hormones,” serotonin and oxytocin. Grab whoever’s nearby and give them a good 20-second squeeze; you’ll both benefit! And here’s why touch might be the most important of our five senses.

Snack for happiness and health

You can also get serotonin, and a related amino acid, tryptophan, from food. So try a breakfast with eggs, turkey, chicken, or cheese, and add some nuts, banana, pineapple, or plums to pump up those brain chemicals. Here are 14 more ways to overcome depression naturally.

Be scents-itive

Research into the power of essential oils has pointed to orange and lavender scents as mood-boosters. Taking a whiff of either these aromas can help improve your mood and reduce any anxiety you might be feeling. You can diffuse the scent in your home or office, or just take a good sniff from a container of oil or another scented object. Here’s how to use essential oils safely.

Walk it off

Walk your way out of a lousy mood. A quick stroll—just five or 10 minutes—gives you three cheerer-uppers in one: Fresh air, sunlight, and movement—not to mention a bevy of health benefits. Exercise releases feel-good endorphins in your body, the sun gives you vitamin D, and outdoor air offers a nice hit of oxygen and encourages you to breathe it in deeply.

Content continues below ad

Just picture it

Outdoor walks are beneficial, and so are walks down memory lane! Research has found that scrolling through pics of your friends, family, and travels can boost your mood as well, or better, than listening to music, drinking a glass of wine, or even eating chocolate.

Do a good deed

Cheer yourself up by cheering someone else. The “helper halo” effect is real! Get inspired by these heartwarming stories of good neighbors, and find someone who could use your help today. Offer a cup of coffee, a sweet note, or even just a smile. It’ll do you both good.

Pray or meditate

Whatever your spiritual practice, spending a few minutes on it can elevate your mood. Being mindful can change your brain and improve your well-being. And some time in prayer or meditation helps distract you from whatever it is that’s dragging you down today. See the bigger picture. Try these little ways to sneak more meditation into your day.

Find some flowers

Pick up an inexpensive bouquet for your desk, or just take notice of the flowers outside your window or along your route to work.  Getting a glimpse of floral beauty can reduce anxiety and even improve productivity and creativity, whether you are male or female, young or old.

Claim victory

Give yourself a little win to counteract the grumps. What’s your party trick? If you can balance a spoon on your nose, play a quick tune on the piano, or magically pull a quarter from your kid’s ear, do it now—just for the satisfaction of knowing you can.

Stretch and soothe.

Yoga poses like these easy ones can reverse a bad mood quicker than you can say “downward-facing dog.” The best postures for changing your mindset include inversions, backbends, and balances. Start and finish with a child’s pose for relaxation. In between, try:

  • Inversions (where your head is below your heart) for a literal change of perspective and a lowering of blood pressure: Headstand, shoulder stand, legs up the wall, and down dog
  • Backbends for energy and increased blood flow: bow, wheel, dancer, and camel
  • Balance poses to shift your focus away from your mood to maintaining your balance: tree, eagle, boat

Ocular Migraines: The Scary Health Problem No One Talks About

What is an ocular migraine?

If you’re seeing flashes or spots along with your head pain, you may be having an ocular migraine. Although the term is popular, it’s not an actual diagnosis, says University of Arizona neurology professor John Wall, MD. However, it does describe a real phenomenon that some people with migraines experience. “It refers to either some blindness in one eye during a migraine or having a migraine with aura,” he says. A patient may also call something an “ocular migraine” if they have an aura without a headache at all, says John Rothrock, MD, a professor of neurology at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Be aware of the signs that your head pain can is a sign of a much more serious condition.

Symptoms of an ocular migraine

If you have a migraine with aura, you’ll “see” the symptoms before feeling any head pain. This may be wavy, zigzag, or shimmering lines or a blind spot in one area of your vision for about 15 to 20 minutes. (They normally do not last beyond an hour.) About 20 to 30 minutes after the aura disappears, your headache may start, says Dr. Wall.

Why do they happen?

While 12 percent of the American population reports getting migraines, a smaller number experience auras. An aura is similar to an electrical wave that affects the areas of your brain that process visual information, says the Mayo Clinic. Periods of brain excitement followed by a depression in activity is believed to be responsible for setting off an aura, explains Dr. Wall. (Find out the common causes of migraines.)

Ocular-Migraine-The-Scary-Health-Problem-No-One-Talks-About

Who’s most likely to have them?

Women are more likely to have migraines in general. In fact, migraines are three times more prevalent in women than men, says Dr. Rothrock. “This is likely due to female sex hormones that trigger migraines or make women more sensitive to migraines,” he says. There’s also a strong genetic component.

What are the risks?

By themselves, auras do not put you at risk. However, you may be more prone to other conditions, the most significant being slightly higher odds of stroke if you have a migraine with aura (rather than a migraine alone), says Dr. Wall. “Women with a migraine with aura may have about twice as many strokes as those who don’t,” he says. While that sounds alarming, the actual statistical risk is really small, he adds. If you have a migraine, you may also be at risk for this surprising disorder.

They may make you feel like you’re having a stroke

A migraine with aura isn’t just visual. Dr. Rothrock says that some people have sensory auras, which means they get numbness or tingling in their face or hand. “This can be misdiagnosed as a stroke or partial seizure,” he says. A patient history (in this case, someone who has had migraines with auras) is one of the best ways to make the diagnosis. An MRI can rule out a stroke.

Content continues below ad

You can still take birth control

If you’re a woman who suffers from migraines with aura, you may have heard that there’s also an elevated risk of stroke if you take estrogen-based oral contraceptives. However, if you have no other risk factors (for instance, you’re a female under age 35 who doesn’t smoke), a migraine specialist may feel comfortable prescribing these to you. “It may also stabilize your estrogen levels to make your migraines better,” says Dr. Wall. Find out how to predict when you’ll get a migraine.

How to treat one

Ready for some rough news? While admittedly having an aura—with or without a migraine—can be really bothersome and impact your quality of life and ability to be productive, there is little you can do in terms of how to prevent ocular migraines or treat them. “The reality is that nothing to shorten or stop a typical aura has ever been shown to be effective,” says Dr. Rothrock.

Warning signs of a migraine

Many people who have migraines with auras have what are called “prodromal symptoms,” hitting up to 72 hours in advance. You may notice a predictive pattern of irritability, euphoria, thirst, hunger, or simply feeling “off,” explains Dr. Wall. In that case, he doesn’t suggest taking medication that far in advance, but make sure you’re ready for one by carrying your medications with you and responding quickly, he says. Check out more migraine warning signs.

Taking away the pain

If your ocular migraine (or a migraine with aura) precedes head pain, there are things you can do to treat it effectively. You can take an OTC migraine medication, like Excedrin, when you feel an aura coming on, says Dr. Wall. If OTCs don’t work, your doctor may prescribe triptans, an abortive medication to stop the pain. You’re a good candidate for these if you have about four to six migraines a month, he says.

8 Everyday Habits That Could Trigger a Panic Attack

What is a panic attack?

Dark-haired girl covers her face with hands

There’s a big difference between feeling nervous and having a full-blown panic attack. “A panic attack is a sudden state of intense fear or panic that often appears to come out of the blue,” explains Oklahoma City-based therapist Thai-An Truong, LPC, LADC. She says that the symptoms will peak in minutes and last about half an hour, but most people will feel the exhaustion and residual effects hours afterward. According to Truong, the most common symptoms are increased heart rate, heart palpitations, chest pain, sweating, shaking, difficulty breathing, and hyperventilating. What causes panic attacks depend on the individual, so identifying your personal triggers may help you to manage them. By cutting out some of these habits—with the help of a therapist if necessary—you may notice a difference in your overall anxiety levels. Learn to recognize the 10 clear signs of a panic attack.

8 Steps to Take When Your Favorite Beauty Product Is Discontinued

set of decorative cosmetic powder, concealer, eye shadow brush, blush, foundationLook online

Forget stalking your ex on social media—now is the time to put your Internet investigation skills to better use. Check out discount makeup sites like BeautyEncounter.com, BuyMeBeauty.com, and OverstockCosmetics.com, which carry surplus stock of marked-down products long after they’ve been cleared off store shelves. If your preliminary search is unsuccessful, eBay and Amazon are always viable options—just beware of counterfeits and products that are opened, used, expired, or look questionable in consistency. But whatever the source, if you do find exactly what you’re looking for, you’re going to want to stock up while you sill can. Here’s how to find the best lipstick for your skin tone.

Contact the company

Just because you can’t purchase your beauty BFF at its original retailer, doesn’t mean it isn’t out there. So before you scrounge through the sale bins at Sephora, ring up the company and explain your sitch. A representative may be able to give you leads on where to find the product, or suggest one that’s similar—and in-stock.

If you’re looking for an item under the Estée Lauder umbrella (i.e. M·A·C, Bobbi Brown, Clinique, and many more), contact the brand’s Gone But Not Forgotten program. A team of professionals will track down any product discontinued within the past 36 months, and if they find it, you can purchase as many as six pieces depending on availability. (Did you know that THIS is the most popular makeup brand in America?)

Check out sibling brands

Here’s a pro secret: Many of your favorite brands are owned by the same parent company, meaning that their products tend to be similar—if not the same. Get to know your product’s sister brands and look out for distinct resemblances in packaging and formula. A luxury product may be identical to its drugstore sibling, meaning you could go home with the exact product you’ve been vying for—just with a different label (and potentially a different price tag). And if you’re shopping for beauty on a budget, check out these celeb-approved drugstore lipsticks.

Find a good dupe

While the color and finish may not be exact, if you’re comfortable with a close-enough product, the beauty world boasts endless options. Surf through millions of dupe videos on YouTube, side-by-side comparisons on Pinterest, or reviews by MakeupAlley.com, and have faith that the perfect replacement is out there. If you prefer to do the investigative work yourself, take your beloved item to a beauty retailer (one where you can swatch to your heart’s content) and get down to business. If your hand isn’t a smudgy mess of colors by the end of it, you’re not doing it right.

Get it customized

Bring your makeup back from the dead with beauty customization services that guarantee to replicate your favorite product’s exact color and texture. Just be sure to save a sample of the product and send it off to the expert color matchers at Giella Beauty or Three Custom Colors, which also offers an archive of over 10,000 previously replicated requests that date back to the 1930s. For face products like foundation and powder, try the custom blend services at Prescriptives, which allows you to get involved in the process with a private consultation via video chat. If you’re on the hunt for lipstick, head to one of Bite Beauty’s three Lip Lab locations in New York, San Francisco, or Toronto, and re-create your favorite shade in a matter of minutes. Find out what your favorite lip color says about your personality.

Get crafty

If you’re totally head-over-heels for a specific hue, you probably already have something like it in your collection. For colors that are slightly off, mix in other shades to find the perfect tone. It might take some playing around, but once you achieve awesomeness, you may even forget about your old favorite. If consistency allows (i.e. liquid and cream products), bottle up your new creation and jot down the recipe so it can be easily replicated. You can even add illuminator, moisturizer, or serum to take your custom product to the next level. And if you’re also into DIY-ing your skincare routine, check out these facial treatments you can safely do at home.

Swap your stash

If you have an overwhelming stockpile of samples, gifted makeup kits, and impulsive trendy purchases in your collection (let’s be honest… who doesn’t!?), chances are your friends do, too. Organize a beauty swap and trade new or gently used beauty items for products of equal value. Before the party, create a Facebook or WhatsApp group and encourage friends to list their most-wanted products and what they’d be willing to trade for them. You may find the exact item you’ve been looking for, or at the very least, take home a good replacement. If you’re still on the hunt, take your exchange global on swap site, Swapidu.com.

Embrace the change

Take a moment to fully heal from the heartbreak, but realize that this is your opportunity to finally explore new brands and shades—without feeling like you’re cheating on an old favorite. The world of beauty is more exciting and accessible than ever, and with perpetual advances, there may even be something better on store shelves since you were last on the market. 15 Things About Social Anxiety Disorder Psychologists Wish You Knew

Anxiety is common

Anxiety is one of the most prevalent mental illnesses in the United States, affecting approximately 40 million American adults (18 percent of the population). If that’s not jarring enough, it’s still a highly under-recognized condition—although so many suffer, most people suffer in silence. Social anxiety disorder (SAD), otherwise known as social phobia, is one common type of anxiety disorder that involves a significant amount of fear in one or more social situations. “These fears can be triggered by real or perceived criticism by others and can impact a person at school, work, a social gathering, crowded place like restaurants, bars or sporting event, and even places like doctor’s offices or stores,” explains Jesse Matthews, PsyD, Pennsylvania-based psychologist.

(If you’re surprised to find that SAD is so common, check out some more common myths about mental health.)

SAD affects people of all ages

Social anxiety disorder doesn’t discriminate by age, gender, race, culture or any other variable. “The research shows that SAD tends to be more prevalent, however, in those who value others’ opinions about them, particularly as they relate to opportunities for friendship, relationships or employment,” says Dr. Matthews. Though most people have experienced some degree of being hyper-aroused in social situations, only about 7 percent of adults are currently suffering from social anxiety disorder specifically, and only about 2 percent severely, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. Here are some small, but effective strategies for dealing with social anxiety.

SAD comes with physical symptoms

Symptoms of SAD can be as harmless as feeling hot and sweaty, breathing heavy, experiencing headaches or even nausea, but it can also come with more serious side effects such as panic attacks, tremors, heart palpitations, lightheadedness, and an upset stomach. “Individuals may also have negative thoughts about themselves, difficulty focusing on a task (such as a speech or presentation) or feeling as though everyone is watching or judging them,” says Dr. Matthews.

SAD may stem from childhood experiences

While anyone can develop SAD, research has found a connection to childhood trauma. Specifically, Pilar Jennings, PhD, psychoanalyst and author of To Heal a Wounded Heart, says that it tends to be common in individuals who were raised in a family with high or rigid expectations. “Families prone to shame and blame also tend to induce pervasive anxiety—the sense of walking a tightrope can develop and become part of people’s inner template for a relationship,” she adds. “When we’re young, we develop beliefs about who we are and how relationships work before we can consciously reflect on these beliefs, but for people raised in families that create anxiety, these beliefs can feel like absolute truths,” she explains.

People with SAD may avoid social interaction

It’s an understandable way to cope, but isolation can deprive SAD sufferers of the opportunity to enjoy situations that can end up giving them confidence, says Dr. Jennings. While it’s not easy, she says, if you’re suffering from this anxiety, being social can be healing. “Be patient with yourself—it can take time to trust that judgment and criticism are not the only acceptable outcome.”

People closest to sufferers can get hurt

SAD can be hard on friends, family members, co-workers, and significant others—for example, when a SAD sufferer snaps at a friend encouraging him or her to be more social. “Social anxiety is about the person suffering from it—it stems from their own feelings and symptoms about interacting socially in general,” says Paulette Sherman, PsyD, psychologist, director of the site My Dating & Relationship School, and author of Dating from the Inside Out. “The likelihood is that a SAD sufferer is disappointed for disappointing a friend, and that they care about that friend very much.” Here are tips on solving everyday friendship problems.

SAD is not synonymous with “anti-social”

“It is untrue that most people with social anxiety prefer to be antisocial and to avoid connecting with others,” says Dr. Sherman. “In fact, many of them feel very lonely and want nothing more than to connect and feel a sense of support, acceptance, community, and belonging.” Their wish is often to be able to go out and have fun, but it’s often their fears of judgment and anxiety that stop them from acting on this desire, Dr. Sherman explains. “It is something they need to learn how to combat through treatment and possibly with the help of medication over time.”

SAD can be unpredictable

“There are cases where someone with social anxiety feels fine, and then suddenly something is triggered and they start to have a panic attack or other symptoms and want to leave an event,” says Dr. Sherman. “Although this may be difficult to understand for the person with them, it is not an attempt at manipulation or something they can control.”

Do you know the symptoms of a panic attack?

SAD doesn’t just cause distress in the heat of the moment

Many people who suffer from SAD experience anticipatory anxiety—they worry about an episode occurring. “An individual may begin to experience symptoms moments, hours, days, or even weeks before a known event,” says Dr. Matthews. This is particularly common in situations involving public speaking. “A person may fear that he will look bad while speaking, stutter or fumble over words, sound like he doesn’t know what he is talking about or face questions he isn’t prepared to answer,” says Dr. Matthews. “Given the height of the anxiety, any of this may actually occur!”

It’s hard for SAD sufferers to meet new people

“The fact that they have no basis of trust or experience with that person can make the stakes feel higher because there are more unknowns,” says Dr. Sherman. “They may need more support and compassion in these situations should they attempt to work through them.”

Take advantage of these eight tips on the best ways to meet—and attract—people.

People with SAD are often hypercritical of themselves

According to Dr. Matthews, SAD sufferers can set unrealistically high expectations on their appearance, behavior, or performance, and become obsessed with minor details. “If they perceive anything as even slightly wrong, they may blow it out of proportion,” he says. “For example, if a person has a pimple or spills a small amount of coffee on himself, he may be overly conscious of his appearance, or if he trips on the carpet or drops his papers prior to a presentation, his anxiety may go sky high, thus impacting performance.”

SAD steals opportunity

Dr. Matthews explains that fear of judgment or rejection interferes with meeting new friends or going on dates—and the fear can also cause them to drift apart from existing friends. “Individuals may even limit themselves in terms of school or career, opting for online college or commuting locally instead of going away to college or taking a lower-paying job or declining a promotion in order to avoid having to deal with people,” he says.

You can’t talk someone out of social anxiety

If you’re not suffering from SAD yourself, it can be difficult to understand what it’s like and why someone can’t seem to “shake it off.” But logic doesn’t play a role in this condition: “If someone has SAD, their social anxiety consists of physical symptoms, fears, negative thoughts and a constellation of things that can often require cognitive therapy and medication,” says Dr. Sherman. “Although you would love to help, it’s unrealistic to think you can cheerlead or talk someone out of this and it puts undue pressure and unrealistic expectations on that person.”

Social anxiety usually comes with a lot of embarrassment and shame

Those suffering from this disorder often feel they’re being judged harshly by others—and that can lead them to be difficult to deal with. Knowing the source of this behavior, however, can help you help them alleviate the shame, notes. Dr. Jennings. “It has a cause, sometimes multiple causes, and more awareness of these causes can usher in needed compassion alongside increased trust in healing,” he says.

Many sufferers self-medicate with alcohol or other drugs

There’s a reason alcohol goes by the name “liquid courage.” Drinking and drugs lower people’s inhibitions, often reducing anxiety and making people less self-conscious. Relying on it as a means of opening up and relaxing in social situations can be dangerous, especially if you’re taking other medications for anxiety. “Anti-anxiety medications may also be used for the purpose of allowing people to relax in social situations, though regular use isn’t typically indicated, due to their often addictive nature,” says Dr. Matthews. “It can also be very dangerous, even fatal, for individuals to mix alcohol with other substances, including anti-anxiety medications.” Try these natural remedies for anxiety disorders instead.

SAD is treatable

Fortunately, there is a lot people can do to help themselves manage symptoms of social anxiety. “There is a lot of support available these days in the form of self-help books, online communities and support, therapy and skills training, and medication,” says Marni Amsellem, PhD, consultant and private psychology practice, Smart Health Psychology. “All have their benefits, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach.” One of the more popular methods of treatment for SAD is cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which involves helping an individual understand the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and behavior while helping them to learn skills for altering their anxious thoughts, thus reducing anxious feelings and behavior, explains Dr. Matthews. “Medication may also be prescribed by a physician to help a person to manage symptoms of SAD, though a person must be careful to follow the physician’s orders, keeping in mind that these kinds of medications may be abused or a person could develop a dependency on them,” he adds. Medication, of course, can help to manage symptoms, but does not teach a person about their anxiety or how to cope with it the way CBT can.

The Best Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Treatments to Try Right Now

What is benzoyl peroxide?

face of young beautiful healthy woman looking in the mirror
Benzoyl peroxide, otherwise known as BPO, is a potent acne product that is extremely beneficial for inflammatory acne. “What makes this such a fantastic acne medicine is that it is bactericidal, which means that it kills the bacteria that cause acne,” explains Joyce Imahiyerobo-Ip, MD, director of cosmetic dermatology at South Shore Medical Center. “It also helps to remove sebum and dead skin cells from pores, which helps to treat whiteheads and blackheads.” Dermatologists often prescribe benzoyl peroxide to be used in combination with other acne-fighting products, in order to reduce the risk of irritation that can sometimes be caused from using too much BPO. Keep reading to find out with BPO products on the market today are top-rated by dermatologists.

A less-irritating scrub

From the company that took Differin Gel from prescription-only to over the counter, Differin Daily Deep Cleanser ($12) contains just 5 percent BPO. “Benzoyl peroxide effectively treats inflammatory acne because it reduces a few factors that cause acne—oil production and the P.Acnes bacteria,” explains Dendy Engelman, MD, of Manhattan Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery. “What I like about this one is that BPO at 5 percent is just as effective as BPO at 10 percent, but less irritating than the higher concentration.”

Good for dry and oily skin

Though on the pricier side, Obagi CLENZIderm MD Therapeutic Lotion BPO 5% ($69) contains more than just pore-clearing and blemish-busting ingredients like benzoyl peroxide. Joel Schlessinger, MD, dermatologist and RealSelf advisor, explains that it also contains hydrating ingredients, like squalane, that keep skin from becoming flaky and inflamed. He recommends it for dry skin types, as well as those with oily or combination skin. Don’t forget to test out these surprising home remedies for acne, too.

A quick-use scrub

Clean & Clear Continuous Control Acne Cleanser ($8) contains 10 percent BPO, which, for those suffering bad bouts of acne, is ideal for both face and body. “While this or other washes may be called cleansers, they should be looked at as short-contact therapies,” explains Joshua Zeichner, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. “The product needs to touch the skin for enough time to allow it to penetrate to do its job.” He recommends applying this cleanser directly to the skin and singing the alphabet before rinsing to ensure that it sits on the skin for long long enough to exert its effect.

Derms favorite

La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo ($40) is a favorite of dermatologists across the country, all because it contains 5.5 percent of micronized benzoyl peroxide in combination with lipohydroxy acid (LHA). “LHA is a cousin of salicylic acid, which helps exfoliate dead cells from the surface of the skin and remove excess oil,” explains Dr. Zeichner. “It also offers a skin-brightening and anti-aging benefit, so it serves many purposes.”

Treat body and facial acne

Available as both a creamy wash or a bar, PanOxyl Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Creamy Wash ($12) is beloved by dermatologists for its ability to treat both body and facial acne, as well as folliculitis, a common summer skin problem where tiny red bumps tend to crop up around hair follicles. “It comes in two strengths, 4 percent and 10 percent, and also comes in a large bottle or bar that is shower-friendly,” explains Tsippora Shainhouse, MD, Beverly Hills-based dermatologist. “Just be careful when rinsing it off with a towel, as it can bleach fabrics!” Plus, here are the top ingredients people with acne-prone skin need in their beauty arsenal.

Up the potency

For those needing a more potent option, Dr. Schlessinger recommends Replenix Acne Solutions Acne Wash 10% ($15), which contains 10 percent BPO. “It makes for a highly purifying cleanser that aims to clear current breakouts while eliminating excess oil and bacteria,” he says. “Due to its high concentration of BPO, this cleanser is ideal for those struggling with adult and teen acne or those with excessively oily skin.”

Less drying, more hydrating

Glo Skin Beauty Clear Skin Spot Treatment ($24) features an advanced botanical formula containing just 2 percent BPO, which helps keep the skin hydrated. It contains a soothing complex of chamomile, cucumber, and rosemary extract and aloe vera, which work in conjunction to reduce inflammation and hyperpigmentation, along with breakouts and clogged pores.

A two-for-one cream

For those concerned with increasingly visible fine lines and wrinkles, as well as hormonal breakouts (also known as adult acne), Jan Marini Age Intervention Duality ($93) topical cream is ideal. “This treatment not only contains the highest percentage BPO but also 1 percent retinol, which is a great combination not only for acne but also for signs of aging,” explains Dr. Schlessinger. “It is an over-the-counter alternative to Epiduo, a prescription product.” Make sure you check out these acne treatment products that dermatologists use on themselves.

21 Amazing Health and Beauty Benefits of Olive Oil

Longevity

Can olive oil make you “forget to die”? It’s true that people live longer in some regions where they follow the Mediterranean diet, and scientists have studied the benefits of olive oil—specifically extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO)—with respect to this phenomenon. “Olive oil is a monounsaturated fat, rich in polyphenols,” says Neal Shipley, MD, medical director at Northwell Health-GoHealth Urgent Care in New York. “Polyphenols are known to be a valuable component of a healthful diet, fighting age-related diseases such as high blood pressure and heart disease.”

Preventing stroke

One of the ways to reduce your risk of stroke is to add more olive oil to your diet. “There are many studies to support that regular consumption of extra-virgin olive oil can lower risk of stroke,” Dr. Shipley says. Research from France found that study participants who used olive oil regularly had a 41 percent reduced risk of stroke compare to those who never used it.

Heart health

Among the other cardiovascular benefits of olive oil are the effect of their monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), which can help keep your ticker working well, according to the American Heart Association. “Another recent study was able to demonstrate that olive oil consumption, specifically the extra-virgin variety, is associated with reduced risks of cardiovascular disease and mortality in individuals at high cardiovascular risk,” Dr. Shipley says. However, you only receive EVOO’s benefits when you replace unhealthy oils or butter with it—not when you add it to what you’re already eating. In case you’re wondering, this is what makes olive oil “extra virgin.”

The benefits of olive oil also extend to beauty hacks. As a natural conditioner, olive oil is nature’s cure for dry hair. Try massaging it directly into parched tips. “Another way you can take advantage of the hydrating nature of olive oil is by adding a few tablespoons of it to your shampoo,” says Larissa Iracheta, director of quality at Deoleo, the parent company of Bertolli and Carapelli olive oils. “This technique will help soften and strengthen your hair.” Olive oil works particularly well for thick, processed, or split hair.

Better cholesterol

One of the reasons EVOO is so good for cardiovascular health is because it reduces the cholesterol that clogs arteries. “In a study from the medical journal Circulation, researchers found that participants who consumed a Mediterranean diet enriched with olive oil had better working levels of HDL cholesterol, or ‘the good cholesterol,’ which aids in removing LDL, the ‘bad cholesterol,’ from one’s blood stream,” Dr. Shipley says. But first, you’ll need these tasty recipes that follow a Mediterranean diet plan.

Improving acne

One of the daily habits of people who never get acne is following a Mediterranean diet that includes olive oil. Actress Chloe Grace Moretz credits olive oil with getting rid of her acne. “I wash my face with olive oil,” she told Allure. “I swear my skin is so much clearer because of it.” In the same way olive oil can remove oil-based makeup (more on that later), it can help remove the oil from your skin. Plus, some studies have shown olive oil has antibacterial properties, which can help clear up skin infections that can lead to breakouts.

Warding off cancer

Add EVOO to the list of proven foods to help prevent cancer. Olive oil’s antioxidants may keep abnormal cells from growing—and one study even showed a compound in olive oil to actually kill cancer cells. “Oleic acid, the main monounsaturated fatty acid in olive oil, has been shown to stop cancer-causing protein activity in brain cells,” Dr. Shipley says. “Researchers are still determining whether the dietary intake of olive oil can provide this benefit.” Still, it’s worth it even for a potential life-saving benefit. These are the signs you’re not eating enough healthy fats.

Treating dry scalp

If your scalp is dry in the winter, try another natural olive oil for hair treatment. Apply olive oil to your scalp and let it sit for an hour, or overnight (cover with a shower cap), then shampoo it out. But be sure that your condition isn’t actually dandruff, which is caused by an overactive fungus. If that’s the case, see your doctor or dermatologist for professional help, although eating more monounsaturated fats like those found in olive oil may actually help dandruff as well.

Calming inflammation

Another reason for olive oil health benefits may be that it helps lower the inflammation associated with so many medical conditions. “Polyphenols are anti-inflammatory,” Dr. Shipley says. “One specific phenol compound, oleocanthal, has been known to act in a similar way as ibuprofen in the body.” While ibuprofen isn’t recommended to take long-term, olive oil can be part of a life-long approach to healthy living. Look out for these signs that you’re buying fake olive oil.

Preventing diabetes

medicine, diabetes, glycemia, health care and people concept - close up of male finger with blood drop and test stripe

Studies have shown that EVOO consumption reduces post-meal blood sugar levels in both healthy and diabetic participants. “High levels of sugar in the blood cause oxidative stress—this stress is a main component of diabetes,” Dr. Shipley says. “Extra-virgin olive oil is rich in antioxidants that can help diminish this stress, thus reducing the risk of complications of diabetes.” Also, a component found in olives called oleuropein may help to increase insulin secretion, which may control metabolism and help prevent diabetes, he says.

Moisturizing skin

One of the super-calming face mask ingredients that soothe winter’s dry skin is olive oil. “EVOO is so great for skin because of its high levels of polyphenols, vitamin E, and phytosterols, which function as both antioxidants and anti-inflammatories,” says Jessa Blades, a natural beauty expert and makeup artist. “The oil helps to protect against sun damaged skin and increase the moisture retention capacity of the skin. To use as a moisturizer for the face, I like to spray a toner or hydosol to the skin first, and then massage the oil into that.” Olive oil can be used as an all-over body moisturizer, too.

Improved brain function

Science just proved olive oil can stave off Alzheimer’s. “A recent study of mice found that regular consumption of extra-virgin olive oil can aid in learning ability and memory by protecting brain tissue from toxic substances, called amyloid-beta plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, that are believed to cause Alzheimer’s disease,” Dr. Shipley says. Although this study was in rodents, it’s hopeful that more research will verify the findings in humans.

Maintaining a healthy weight

Although olive oil should be consumed in moderation, it can help you keep the scale at a healthy number by replacing other, unhealthier oils, according to the Mayo Clinic. “Not only does fat not make you fat, but it is essential in maintaining a healthy weight, and is even a necessary part of a weight loss protocol,” says Dr. Frank Lipman, bestselling author and founder of Be Well and the Eleven Eleven Wellness Center in New York City. Studies have shown a Mediterranean diet rich in olive oil doesn’t lead to weight gain—and can even lead to weight loss. Plus, “healthy fats allow you to feel satiated from a meal, which prevents overeating and binging that we often see on low fat diets,” he says. Don’t miss these other tips for losing weight on a Mediterranean diet.

DIY lip scrub

Looking for homemade remedies for dry and chapped lips when lip balm just won’t cut it? Try a scrub of natural ingredients. “Olive oil is very hydrating,” Iracheta says. “You can make an easy lip scrub by mixing olive oil, sugar, honey, and brown sugar.” This combo gets rid of dead skin while it smoothes and brightens your lip. Gently apply to rough lips to restore softness—just don’t rub too hard.

Helping rheumatoid arthritis

Millennials may need to start worrying about rheumatoid arthritis (RA), because it doesn’t just affect older people. But no matter what age you are, the anti-inflammatory effects of olive oil may help stave off the condition. A study from Spain found that injecting a polyphenol extract from EVOO into mice affected with RA reduced effects from the disease. Although we don’t know for sure that consuming it will have the same result, the compounds in olive oil are proven to be beneficial, and its use is supported by the Arthritis Foundation.

Getting rid of lice

Olive oil has been used in hair care for thousands of years, and one reason why could be because it helps keep lice away. This technique hasn’t exactly been scientifically proven, but studies have shown that chemical treatments have created “super lice” that are now resistant to them. So, try out this home remedy: Saturate the entire head, cover, and leave on overnight. Then, use a nit comb thoroughly and wash out.

Treating eczema

Skin that’s irritated may also benefit from the soothing properties of olive oil. Because of its anti-inflammatory action, olive oil could work to calm the hyperactive sensitivity of eczema-prone skin. Check with your doctor before starting this regimen, and stop if it makes your skin more inflamed.

Anti-aging skin treatment

One of the everyday habits that can make you look way younger is an olive oil skin regimen. The antioxidants in olive oil work as an anti-aging treatment to revitalize older skin when topically applied. “These antioxidants include vitamin E and polyphenols, which help to gather and neutralize free radicals that can otherwise damage the skin and advance the appearance of aging,” Elizabeth Tanzi, MD, founder and director of Capital Laser & Skin Care in Maryland, told Women’s Health.

Fighting depression

A growing body of research is showing a link between food and mental health, according to the American Psychological Association. One recent study from Australia showed that participants with depression who were counseled on eating a Mediterranean diet containing olive oil were five times as likely to improve than those who received social counseling. Though small, it was the first randomized trial that showed foods could treat depression, likely through the anti-inflammatory properties they contain. “It supports the previous extensive research from human population studies and animal research suggesting that diet is a key determinant of mental and brain health,” study author Felice Jacka said in a press release. Check out these simple tricks to make your current diet more Mediterranean.

Natural makeup remover

You might think that olive oil would make a dirty, greasy face even greasier, but it turns out the opposite is true. Olive oil grabs onto other oils, taking them with it as you wipe. “Olive oil works similarly to makeup removers, and it is non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog pores,” Iracheta says. Blades notes that it’s great for removing waterproof mascara without irritating eyes.

Aiding digestion

Olive oil helps your body absorb the nutrients it needs from foods, according to research from Purdue University. “Good quality olive oil helps with digestion by lubricating the digestive tract, and as a fat, it allows for the absorption of the fat soluble vitamins that exist in the real, wholesome foods that should be eaten at every meal,” Dr. Lipman says. “It’s a healthy fat that I often recommend to patients and use in my own life.”

More beauty uses

Stock olive oil in your medicine cabinet, as well as in your pantry, because there are myriad other beauty uses for it. “I love to add it to my hands at night for a hand massage while watching a movie. It softens my cuticles and makes the massage really easy to do,” Blades says. Olive oil can also be used as shaving cream or to heal cracked heels. Check out even more extraordinary uses for olive oil.
