“Cancer Cures” Are All Over the Internet—and the FDA Isn’t Happy About It

Bogus come-ons pop up online all the time, but there’s a world of difference between offering a free cookware set or a face lift in a bottle—and promising a “cure” for cancer.

At least according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which has now called out the companies claiming to diagnose, treat, or even cure cancer in their ads, videos, and other marketing ploys, such as testimonials that boast miraculous outcomes. Federal investigators have spent months looking scoping out these bogus products, and have now compiled a report of 14 companies peddling fake cures, including pills, topical creams, ointments, oils, drops, syrups, teas, and diagnostic tools (such as thermography devices). They include products marketed for use by humans or pets that make illegal, unproven claims regarding preventing, reversing or curing cancer; killing or inhibiting cancer cells or tumors; or other similar anti-cancer claims.

The FDA warns that the products are a cruel deception, taking advantage of vulnerable and desperate cancer patients.

“A cancer diagnosis often provokes a sense of desperation,” physicians at the FDA wrote in a blog post. “Unfortunately, rogue operations exploiting those fears peddle untested and potentially dangerous products, particularly on the internet.” The FDA is responding by taking enforcement actions against unscrupulous companies and by educating consumers to be wary of unproven claims.

They have issued warning letters to 14 U.S.-based companies illegally selling more than 65 products. If companies do not cease hocking their wares, they “face criminal prosecution and court-ordered decrees that require them to recall products and get written permission from FDA before resuming operations.” If the violations are not corrected, companies are subject to one year in federal prison, five years’ probation and a fine of either $100,000 or twice the gain from the offense.

Along with wasting people’s money, the bigger problem with phony remedies is the detrimental effect they can have on people’s health. The products could have various known side effects, and worse, could prevent people from taking actual life-saving medications for cancer.

“These products are untested,” warned Donald D. Ashley, director of the Office of Compliance in FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, and Douglas Stearn, director of the Office of Enforcement and Import Operations within FDA’s Office of Regulatory Affairs. “Some contain ingredients that may be a direct risk to your health. The ingredients may interact in a dangerous way with professionally prescribed treatments. They are not a substitute for appropriate treatments. Using these products can waste your money, and, more importantly, endanger your health.”

The FDA published the listing the names of firms that “exploit the fears” of vulnerable patients desperately seeking a lifeline on Monday, April 25. The companies in question now have 15 days to respond with how they plan to comply with the law, or they will be faced with the FDA’s pursuit of legal action.

6 Signs Your Headache Could Be Something Way Worse

Your head is throbbing

headacheIt’s estimated that around six percent of men and 18 percent of women suffer from migraines. If you happen to fall into that group, you know how painful and debilitating they can be. Though the first time you feel it coming on, you might worry something is terribly wrong, migraine sufferers become experts at the warning signs. Neurologist Isha Gupta, MD, explains, “Severe migraines can be described as intense throbbing or pounding sensations, with sensitivity to light or sound. Other types of severe headaches can be described as sharp stabbing pain in the face or around the eye. Some people have severe tension headache described as a band-like squeezing.” Though it’s important to talk to your doctor if you continuously experience migraine-like symptoms, they can be managed with medicine and therapy.

How Not to Feel Lonely: 50 Science-Backed Tips Everyone Should Read

Remember: We all feel lonely sometimes

It has been reported that one in five Americans suffers from persistent loneliness. Knowing this can bring us some solace; the feeling of loneliness is something many others near and far face in various forms. Loneliness can be a physical distance from family and friends or it can be perceived emotional distance. A perceived sense of isolation can involve feeling alone in certain areas of life. Maybe we think we’re the only ones around us who worry about body image, suffer from embarrassment, or have financial woes. This is simply not true. Maybe success is a lonely experience for us. Maybe we’re the only entrepreneurs in our community or perhaps we just got promoted when everyone around us seems to be struggling. We may have different reasons for being lonely, but at one point or another, we’ve all felt it. (Don’t miss these 17 little things you can do to connect with others.)

Should You Eat Before a Workout? Science Finally Has An Answer

eating

There’s a lot of confusion around exercising and eating. What should you eat before you work out? What about after? How long should you wait to eat? How will all of this benefit your goal of achieving more muscle mass or losing more fat? With so many questions, there’s surely a whole lot of opinions from enthusiasts and experts alike.

But scientists have now definitively answered one important Q: Whether it makes more sense to eat before or after your sweat session.

In a new study, published in the American Journal of Physiology—Endocrinology and Metabolism, researchers from the University of Bath in the U.K. had a group of overweight males walk for 1 hour at 60 percent maximum oxygen consumption on an empty stomach, and then had them walk again for 2 hours on another day after eating a high-calorie, high-carbohydrate breakfast. The researchers collected multiple blood samples after eating or fasting as well as after exercising. They also took adipose tissue (fat) samples directly before and directly following an hour of walking.

The results showed differences in gene expression of the fat tissue in the two trials. The two genes they looked at, PDK4 and HSL, increased as a result of the volunteers fasting and exercising, and decreased when they ate before exercising. The researchers believe that the rise in PDK4 likely shows that stored fat was used to fuel metabolism during exercise as opposed to carbohydrates from food, and that HSL increased when the fat tissue used stored energy to benefit a boost in exercise. In short: When the volunteers exercised without a pre-workout snack, they burned off body fat instead of fuel from food.

According to Dylan Thompson, corresponding author of the study, the results support the viewpoint that fat tissue “often faces competing challenges. For instance,” he says, “after eating it is busy responding to the meal, and a bout of exercise at this time will not stimulate the same [beneficial] changes in adipose or fat tissue. This means that exercise in a fasted state might provoke more favorable changes in adipose tissue, and this could be beneficial for health in the long term.”

How long do you have to forego food to meet their definition of “fasting?” Thompson says: “It can take several hours to fully finish the response to digesting a meal, so the best advice would be to ensure that your last meal was 4 hours before exercise to get the effect that we reported. Or, exercise in the morning before breakfast—this is exactly what we did.”

It’s actually less important how you refuel post-exercise, especially if you’re pretty active generally. “This is only really an issue for people who are looking to repeat a performance or who are looking to train more than one time on one day,” Thompson says, adding, “This is therefore important for more serious athletes, but for everyone else it is probably fine to follow a normal meal pattern without worrying too much about refueling.”

After an intense workout—ideally on an empty stomach—these are some of the best recovery foods.

Not prepping your skin

Mistakes-You're-Making-While-Putting-Makeup-on-at-Your-Desk

There are many reasons why you might decide to wait until you get to work to apply your makeup. You might be a commuter who doesn’t want to apply your makeup in the company of strangers on the subway or you would rather get those extra precious minutes of sleep. Even if you washed your face that morning, applying makeup to skin that has been exposed to pollution and dirt on your walk or drive to work could cause irritation. Before proceeding to apply your makeup, give yourself a few minutes to cool down and then wipe away any sweat on your skin with a moist towelette before adding on a soothing primer to gently prep your skin for the day—your future complexion will thank you! Speaking of getting those extra few minutes of beauty sleep, here are easy beauty tips for the lazy girl.

Don’t Blame Politics for Your Anxiety. The Real Root of It Is the Fear of Being Unneeded.

In many ways, there has never been a better time to be alive. Violence plagues some corners of the world, and too many still live under the grip of tyrannical regimes. And although all the world’s major faiths teach love, compassion and tolerance, unthinkable violence is being perpetrated in the name of religion.

And yet, fewer among us are poor, fewer are hungry, fewer children are dying, and more men and women can read than ever before. In many countries, recognition of women’s and minority rights is now the norm. There is still much work to do, of course, but there is hope and there is progress.

How strange, then, to see such anger and great discontent in some of the world’s richest nations. In the United States, Britain and across the European Continent, people are convulsed with political frustration and anxiety about the future. Refugees and migrants clamor for the chance to live in these safe, prosperous countries, but those who already live in those promised lands report great uneasiness about their own futures that seems to border on hopelessness.

Why?

A small hint comes from interesting research about how people thrive. In one shocking experiment, researchers found that senior citizens who didn’t feel useful to others were nearly three times as likely to die prematurely as those who did feel useful. This speaks to a broader human truth: We all need to be needed. (These are the warning signs you’re elderly parents should stop living alone.)

Being “needed” does not entail selfish pride or unhealthy attachment to the worldly esteem of others. Rather, it consists of a natural human hunger to serve our fellow men and women. As the 13th-century Buddhist sages taught, “If one lights a fire for others, it will also brighten one’s own way.”

Virtually all the world’s major religions teach that diligent work in the service of others is our highest nature and thus lies at the center of a happy life. Scientific surveys and studies confirm shared tenets of our faiths. Americans who prioritize doing good for others are almost twice as likely to say they are very happy about their lives. In Germany, people who seek to serve society are five times likelier to say they are very happy than those who do not view service as important. Selflessness and joy are intertwined. The more we are one with the rest of humanity, the better we feel.

This helps explain why pain and indignation are sweeping through prosperous countries. The problem is not a lack of material riches. It is the growing number of people who feel they are no longer useful, no longer needed, no longer one with their societies.

It is the growing number of people who feel they are no longer useful, no longer needed, no longer one with their societies.

In America today, compared with 50 years ago, three times as many working-age men are completely outside the work force. This pattern is occurring throughout the developed world—and the consequences are not merely economic. Feeling superfluous is a blow to the human spirit. It leads to social isolation and emotional pain, and creates the conditions for negative emotions to take root.

Content continues below ad

What can we do to help? The first answer is not systematic. It is personal. Everyone has something valuable to share. We should start each day by consciously asking ourselves, “What can I do today to appreciate the gifts that others offer me?” We need to make sure that global brotherhood and oneness with others are not just abstract ideas that we profess, but personal commitments that we mindfully put into practice.

Each of us has the responsibility to make this a habit. But those in positions of responsibility have a special opportunity to expand inclusion and build societies that truly need everyone.

Leaders need to recognize that a compassionate society must create a wealth of opportunities for meaningful work, so that everyone who is capable of contributing can do so. A compassionate society must provide children with education and training that enriches their lives, both with greater ethical understanding and with practical skills that can lead to economic security and inner peace. A compassionate society must protect the vulnerable while ensuring that these policies do not trap people in misery and dependence.

Building such a society is no easy task. No ideology or political party holds all the answers. Misguided thinking from all sides contributes to social exclusion, so overcoming it will take innovative solutions from all sides. Indeed, what unites the two of us in friendship and collaboration is not shared politics or the same religion. It is something simpler: a shared belief in compassion, in human dignity, in the intrinsic usefulness of every person to contribute positively for a better and more meaningful world. The problems we face cut across conventional categories; so must our dialogue, and our friendships.

Many are confused and frightened to see anger and frustration sweeping like wildfire across societies that enjoy historic safety and prosperity. But their refusal to be content with physical and material security actually reveals something beautiful: a universal human hunger to be needed. Let us work together to build a society that feeds this hunger.

The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is the spiritual leader of Tibet and a Nobel laureate for peace. Arthur C. Brooks is president of the American Enterprise Institute.

8 Weird Plastic Surgery Procedures You Didn’t Know Existed

Buccal fat removal

Cheekbones are all the rage these days, and you may already know that doctors are using dermal filler to add definition to the bone. But in addition to putting stuff into cheekbones to sculpt them, doctors are also taking stuff out. Buccal fat removal (aka cheek reduction) is a procedure that slims the fat pads in the cheeks to reveal more defined cheekbones. “Buccal fat removal is a little-known procedure,” says Dr. Brent Moelleken, board-certified plastic surgeon who performs the surgery about three times a month. “When people hear they don’t have to live with the chipmunk cheeks that make them look like their older family members, they are excited and get the word out.” If you’re interested in buccal fat removal, just be sure you’re 100 percent committed to this procedure, as very few doctors know how to reverse the effects, so it is generally considered permanent, explains Dr. Moelleken. On RealSelf, interest is up 44 percent year over year with above-average traffic from 18 to 35 year olds. The average price for the cheek-slimming procedure is $3,275. (You can also try these face-slimming makeup tricks.)

Dr. Pimple Popper Reveals the 9 Acne-Fighting Rules Everyone Should Memorize

If you must pop, do it right

poppingpimple
Leave the pimple popping to the pros. Doing it yourself could make the swelling worse or lead to scarring, says board-certified dermatologist Sandra “Dr. Pimple Popper” Lee, MD. If you can’t resist, follow Dr. Lee’s mantra: “Know when to pop and know when to stop.” Messing with the red zits deep under the skin will only leave them even more inflamed. Wait until your pimple has come to a head, with a white center, or apply a warm compress to speed the process along, says Dr. Lee. When you’re ready to attack that sucker, start by washing your face and hands, and sterilize the pin with rubbing alcohol. Squeeze the pimple from all directions. The white and a bit of red will start to come out, but try not to overdo it, warns Dr. Lee. “The more you push, the more swelling you have,” she says. “But if you can, get all the pustules out.”

I Lost My Job and My House to Opiate Addiction—Here’s What Saved Me

Scott Jernigan was never the type of person you might expect to become a drug addict. He had a wife and two successful children, one of whom just earned a master’s degree. He had a well-paying job, a house on a river, and even owned his own boat. The unraveling began when Jernigan, 53, had back surgery for an injury.

At first, he made the mistake of returning to work too soon. Injuring himself again, he required another surgery to repair the crumbling disk in his back. His surgeon had yet to return from a vacation when the second injury occurred, and to tolerate the excruciating pain until his next operation, he began to take opioid painkillers. It was during this time that he believes his opiate addiction began. “By the time I received my second surgery to repair the disk, three weeks after the first surgery, I knew I was addicted to painkillers,” Jernigan says. (Here’s what your doctor probably won’t tell you about painkillers.)

In the beginning, he was able to get the prescription opioids from local pain clinics, but as his need for the drug grew, he turned to the streets and bought them from dealers. At one of his lowest points, even his drug dealer told him to slow down, as he was consuming 30 of the 30 milligram pills per day. Driven by only the desire to get his next fix, he spent $150,000 of his family’s savings in one year. He subsequently sold his home on the river as well as his boat. Jernigan became so focused on finding more drugs, he lost all interest in work, and quit his job without a second thought. He recalls that at one point, his wife even caught him trying to snort the pills.

Although he recognized that his addiction had taken over his life and was affecting his family, his efforts to attempt to quit the drug failed repeatedly, as each time the withdrawal symptoms were simply too much to bear. Close to losing his family along with the home they shared, Jernigan realized he couldn’t fight the battle alone and contacted his doctor. Jernigan reflected, “I was at a point where I lost my boat and second home, had spent way too much money, and I was in a vicious cycle of trying to quit and then relapsing to avoid the withdrawal symptoms. I decided I needed help.” Addiction often affects family members as much as the addict, and his wife was no exception. “My wife knew I was struggling but also was having a hard time dealing with the struggle of having an addicted husband. Our house and my family were on the line, and I knew I needed to find a doctor to help me,” he told Reader’s Digest. In the two years since taking opioids, his addiction nearly cost him everything. “I was sick and tired of being sick and tired,” Jernigan recalls.

His doctor suggested he take part in a drug trial using the drug Probuphene, which provides pain management for opiate addicts. The medication is delivered orally and/or by an implant placed under the skin that releases a steady dose of Buprenorphine, which prevents withdrawal symptoms and reduces cravings. Buprenorphine works by binding to the same receptor as opioids, but binding to them more tightly, so it stays locked in longer, and it locks out any other opioid medication. So even if Jernigan were to take an opioid pill, it would have no effect, because the Buprenorphine would block it. The implant for opiate addiction has played a profound role in Jernigan’s recovery.

Content continues below ad

Since beginning treatment with Probuphene for his addiction, Jernigan has remained clean and is back to himself. He credits the medication for saving his life, adding, “My wife was the first to point out that I had finally returned to being the happy, ambitious person she used to know—in fact, after years of being unable to appreciate anything except getting high, she caught me whistling and singing!” He now travels frequently for work, and the implanted medication has proven to be an easy and efficient way of receiving treatment, and he prefers it to taking daily pills. (This common painkiller could up your risk for cardiac arrest.)

Although his days of addiction are a memory, Jernigan won’t soon forget the reality of what was, saying, “I’m reminded constantly of my addiction. I’m reminded when I take the buprenorphine pill each day, by the look on the pharmacist’s face when I pick up my prescription each month, and when I go on a trip with my family and have a moment of panic when I can’t remember if I’ve packed my medication.” He is quick to recommend the life-saving treatment to others, advising others struggling with opioid addiction, to talk to a doctor who has the ability to prescribe buprenorphine, which is a medication-assisted treatment. “An addict is not going to get better until the pain of withdrawal is gone,” he says.

9 Grooming Treatments Every Man Should Be Getting

Eyebrow waxing and tweezing

Grooming-Treatments-Every-Man-Should-Be-Getting

Listen up: It’s time to take a good, hard look in the mirror to examine the state of your brows. Overly bushy eyebrows don’t make you look more rugged. Instead, you’ll come across as unkempt and disheveled with two furry caterpillars on your forehead. To avoid looking like you neglect all personal upkeep, it’s essential that you groom your brows. “When men go for a haircut, they should ask their stylist to trim their eyebrows so they don’t get too bushy and wily,” advises Carrie Butterworth, stylist and men’s grooming specialist at Roy Teeluck Salon in New York City. “As far as eyebrow waxing, I would recommend it for eliminating the uni-brow look. I don’t recommend getting the eyebrow arch itself shaped, as that looks more effeminate,” she adds. If you need some advice on sculpting, we know the best eyebrows for your face shape.

I Tried IV Wellness Therapy (for Fun!)—Here’s What Happened

IVdrip

If you’re a celebrity addict like I am, you’ve probably seen people like Rihanna, Simon Cowell, or Khloe Kardashian’s ex-husband and ex-NBA star Lamar Odom hooked up to an IV… for fun! If you dig a little deeper, you’ll find out that they’re indulging in the latest wellness craze, IV wellness therapy, which delivers a potent dose of essential nutrients and hydration to help them keep up with their busy lifestyle.

Unfortunately, I still haven’t figured out how to achieve celebrity status and the perks that come with it, but I did get the opportunity to pretend I was one of Hollywood’s elite when I received a complimentary wellness IV of my very own. And, the health writer in me was curious to see if they actually worked or were just another passing trend. Here’s what happened!

I walked from my office in midtown Manhattan (on a freezing cold day!) to a trendy doctor’s office on Fifth Avenue called Evolved Science. As I stepped into the elevator, my celebrity fairytale got off to a perfect start when I found myself face-to-face with a well-known actress, heading to the same place (I immediately fangirled to my mom via text, which a celeb would probably never do). I waited on a sinfully plush couch and was handed water served in a glass made of actual glass (no plastic cups here, very high end!) while I flipped through a “menu” of infusions. Each is a custom-made proprietary formula of amino acids, vitamins, antioxidants, fluids, detoxifiers, and other supplements that are specifically tailored to a patient’s particular needs.

There’s Ultimate Anti-Aging, a blend with ingredients to improve circulation, increase mental clarity, and improve hair and skin texture; Detoxification, a combo made up of electrolytes and minerals to remove free radicals from your system; Endurance, which boosts energy thanks to powerful B vitamins and the antioxidant glutathione; Calm, a mixture to relax your body and mind; and Late Night Rescue, a hydrating hangover cure we all wish we had. (Don’t miss out on these other natural hangover cures.) Since it was my first time, I was set to receive Maintenance, their most basic signature fusion that promises to deliver a dose of detox, energy, hydration, and an immune system boost.

Soon, I was lead to the IV room. It had soothing décor and the comfiest recliners I’ve ever sat in. A kind phlebotomist gave me a pillow to lay on my lap, then instructed me to rest my right arm on it while he tied a rubber tourniquet around my bicep and painlessly stuck a butterfly needle into my protruding blue vein. Then he rolled over my own personal IV and the first bag of nutrients starting dripping down the clear plastic tube and into my body. After switching to a new bag each time another finished (about three in all, each filled with a different antioxidant, vitamin, or amino acid), he unhooked me and declared, “Your first IV is in the books!). It took less than 15 minutes.

As I waited for ES founder Erika Schwartz, MD, in her office (overlooking bustling Fifth Ave. and smelling of essential oils), I didn’t feel any different. But that’s totally normal—Dr. Schwartz assured me that I’d feel it the next day and could expect it to last up to two weeks.

Dr. Schwartz is a sharp and impossibly sweet internist with 25 years of experience and several published books under her belt, including her latest that comes out in May, The New Hormone Solution, which is being hailed as an “anti-aging bible.” She explained that many (not all!) IV infusions are basically just hangover treatments or an intravenous energy drink. What sets Evolved Science’s cocktails apart from the rest is that they’re specifically meant to deliver real health benefits, whether you’re an overworked businessperson or struggling with a condition like Lyme Disease or even arthritis.

“Our IVs are very health focused. We’re taking a trend and making it part of a healthy medical regimen,” she says.

And I believe her! While I was getting my intravenous health boost, I met a film producer who started receiving wellness IVs after she was diagnosed with Lyme Disease. Now, she’s stable but she gets them on a regular basis to keep her energized and healthy during her frequent traveling—she gets one before she leaves on a trip and another as soon as she returns because she says they help her body rebound and combat any jet lag. (Follow these 10 tricks to not get sick after a long flight.)

So do they work and if so, how?

After a long, gloomy winter of an exhausting commute, too few gym trips, not enough sleep, plenty of stress, and one too many bagels, I was praying for this to be a miracle cure. It was. For the past two weeks, I’ve woken up before my alarm and gotten to work at least an hour earlier than I normally do. I’ve finally made it to the gym or found the energy to go on a run outside. I haven’t overindulged in carbs and I’ve barely touched alcohol. Although it seems like a magic elixir, the secret is actually the fact that the nutrients can get working immediately because they’re pumped into our bloodstream, unlike supplements, which take time for the body to absorb.

“Our goal is to help people. These optimize your body and it stays optimized for weeks,” says Dr. Schwartz. “We just refill your reserve with what your body naturally creates, your body takes it from there.”

Simply put, I feel better than I have in months.
